Žuráň, A Hill of Many Epochs
Žuráň... a small hill in the vicinity of the Podolí village, just a little east from Brno, southern Moravia...
Small - big... some places simply have their genius loci...
Being the highest point all around, with 286m a.s.l., despite just few tens of meters higher than the surrounding hills, Žuráň stayed always on guard...
So, he watched the prehistoric sabertooth cats (Homotherium moravicum) hunting on its slopes and the Neandertalers putting on fire on the neighboring Stránská skála hill, hiding in a cave in fear of them. Many tenths of thousands of years later The Hill watched how a neolotic stone industry was produced by the Aechulean people. In 539, a majestic ceremony took place here, when the celtic king Wach was burried here... on 5th December 1805 Napoleon Bonaparte led his famous battle of Austerlitz from its peak.
